Mining sector – vitality for the region
The total investment in mining projects in Lapland over the next ten years is estimated at €5.3 billion. A significant portion of this will be located in Sodankylä. Approximately €90 million will be invested in mineral exploration each year, most of which will be in Lapland.
Mines
Located in Sodankylä, Boliden Kevitsa is Finland’s largest mine, employing approximately 570 people directly and an additional 300 subcontractor employees.
Anglo American is planning a mine in Sakat, north of Sodankylä. The project has been granted EU strategic project status. The mine’s own direct labor requirement throughout its life cycle is estimated at 10,600 person-years, and the multiplier effect will create a labor requirement of 43,662 person-years throughout Finland. The project would bring investments of €980 million.
Rupert Exploration Finland is planning the Ikkari gold mine approximately 45 km northwest of the center of Sodankylä. According to a preliminary study, the initial investment in the project will exceed €500 million, and the project will employ hundreds of people during its operational life. Construction of the Ikkari mine is estimated to begin in 2028.
Mine impacts and the Sodankylä mine cluster
The logistics chains, maintenance, accommodation, and other services associated with mines constitute a significant part of the regional economic impact of the mineral industry. In addition to mineral exploration services, mining operations require various machinery and equipment suppliers, transportation services, and mine maintenance activities. The largest purchased services for mines are related to machinery, transportation, and waste management. Each job in the mining industry generates an average of 2.2 other jobs, particularly in maintenance, logistics, and services. The impacts during construction and operation are also visible in housing, education, commerce, and public services. As a major employer, the industry attracts new residents and commuters, who in turn influence the demand for services in the area.
In the wake of the mining industry, a vibrant cluster of companies has emerged in the area, providing services to mines and mineral exploration as well as other sectors.
